We have not yet verified how travellers currently reach Funafuti from the airport serving it, so we are not publishing routes, operators or fares we cannot stand behind. For what is running on the day you travel, the arrivals information published by your arrival airport is the reliable source, and your accommodation will usually know what works best for the hour you land.
Helpful Tips
Rent a motorbike from the guesthouses near Vaiaku Lagi Hotel for easy island access
Flag down the shared minivan that circles the atoll clockwise every 30 minutes
Walk the causeway to Fongafale Islet at low tide instead of waiting for boat transport
Ask your accommodation to arrange pickup from Funafuti International Airport as taxis are scarce
Common Scams to Avoid
Baggage porters at Funafuti International sometimes insist on a fixed fee far above the usual tip, claiming it's an 'airport handling charge'. Agree on any amount before letting them touch your bags. Carry your own luggage if the price feels off. Simple solution.
Taxis parked directly outside the terminal often quote inflated flat rates to hotels on Fongafale islet. Walk 100 m to the roadside rank. Ask your guesthouse to arrange a pickup at standard rates instead. Save money.
Currency-exchange stalls in the small arrival area may advertise 'no commission' yet use a deliberately poor rate for AUD/USD. Use the airport ATM instead. Wait to exchange cash at the National Bank of Tuvalu in town where rates are transparently posted. Better deal.
