Practical Information

Getting Around

Funafuti is small and best explored on foot or by bicycle. Most guesthouses can arrange bicycle rentals (highly recommended). For longer distances (e.g., to the far end of Fongafale), you can flag down one of the island's few shared taxis (mini-buses) for a small fee. The boat trip to the Conservation Area is arranged as a tour.

Book Ahead

Accommodation must be booked well in advance due to very limited options. The boat trip to the Funafuti Conservation Area should be arranged a day or two before.

Packing Essentials

Reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, swimwear, snorkel gear (can sometimes be rented, but bringing your own is safer), sturdy sandals, a hat, a refillable water bottle, cash (Australian Dollars), and a power adapter (Australian AS/NZS 3112 type).

Total Budget

$375 for 2 days (excluding international flights)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stay at a basic guesthouse instead of the hotel, cook some meals using produce from the market, rent a bicycle instead of taking any taxis, and focus on free activities like swimming at Tausoa Lima, runway walks, and visiting the handicraft centre (just to look).

Luxury Upgrade

Book the best room at the Vaiaku Lagi Hotel. Charter a private boat for a full-day, customized excursion to the Conservation Area with a gourmet picnic. Arrange for a special cultural evening with local music and storytelling.

Family-Friendly

The boat trip to the Conservation Area's calm sandbanks is perfect for kids to swim and play safely. Focus on the interactive experiences at the Handicraft Centre and swimming at the protected Tausoa Lima pool. Keep schedules very loose and be prepared for the island's simple infrastructure.
